Elections as a Strategy

Leadership matters and electing leaders who truly represent their communities is one of the most effective ways to enact just and equitable climate policies and strengthen and defend our democracy. Through LCV Victory Fund, LCV Action Fund, and our state partners, we get involved in electoral races where our work and issues can make the difference.

Electing Climate & Democracy Leaders

Since 2012, nearly 70% percent of the anti-environmental candidates named to LCV Victory Fund’s Dirty Dozen have been defeated.
In 2022, LCV Action Fund-endorsed members of Congress scored 40 percentage points higher than the average score in the National Environmental Scorecard.
Environmental donors have raised more than $111 million for environmental champions since 2010 through GiveGreen.

Targeting the Dirty Dozen

For more than 25 years, LCV Victory Fund’s Dirty Dozen program has targeted candidates – regardless of party affiliation – who consistently side against the environment and are running in races in which LCV Victory Fund has a serious chance to affect the outcome. Since 2012, nearly 70% of the candidates named to the Dirty Dozen have been defeated. The companion Dirty Dozen in the States highlights 12 of the worst environmental candidates in the nation at the state and local level.

Mobilizing LCV Members

Our GreenRoots program mobilizes thousands of LCV members to knock on doors, make phone calls, and rally to help elect LCV Action Fund-endorsed environmental champions. GreenRoots is one of the largest coordinated field programs in progressive politics and has had a significant impact since it was first launched in 2012. In 2022, GreenRoots had 100 program staff in 15 battleground states – making over 1 million calls and texts to mobilize LCV members.
