The Senate considered President Donald Trump’s nomination of Russell Vought to serve as Director of the Office of Management and Budget. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) plays a critical role with the White House overseeing federal agencies and the administration of the federal budget. Vought is a self-proclaimed Christian nationalist and principal architect of the Project 2025 agenda to gut government programs that protect our environment and lower costs for working families. As OMB Deputy Director and then acting Director during the previous Trump administration, Vought proposed extreme anti-environmental budgets, including cuts to EPA’s budget as steep as 31%, and also sought to illegally impound, or block, funding approved by Congress. Vought is the central figure behind the administration’s efforts to hollow out the federal government’s ability to help our communities, including illegally firing thousands of career civil servants and wanting to put those who remain “in trauma.” Furthermore, he believes the Impoundment Control Act to be unconstitutional despite numerous court decisions to the contrary, and in his confirmation hearings he refused to commit to following the law even if he disagrees with it. On February 6, the Senate confirmed Russell Vought to be Director of OMB by a vote of 53-47 (Senate roll call vote 37). NO IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE.

Elon Musk, richest man in the world and unelected Trump oligarch, is slashing jobs and cutting funding from one government agency after another. Congress — not the president, and certainly not the unelected Musk — holds the power of the purse. Send a message to your members of Congress urging them to take their power back and stop Trump and Musk from dismantling our democracy and the vital work of the federal government.
