Representative Don Young (R-AK) sponsored H.R. 2074, the Indian Buffalo Management Act, which would permanently authorize $14 million annually for the Interior Department to create and manage a program to assist tribal governments in the management of American buffalo, or bison, which would help bring buffalo and their habitat back to tribal lands for cultural and ecological restoration. Before the U.S. government oversaw the near extinction of the buffalo in the 19th century, Indigenous people depended on and sustainably managed vast buffalo herds for thousands of years. Bison are also a keystone species that are integral to sustaining healthy Great Plains habitats and balanced prairie ecosystems. H.R. 2074 is a small but important step in helping to ameliorate damage caused to tribal nations. On December 8, the House approved H.R. 2074 by a vote of 373-52 (House roll call vote 427). YES IS THE PRO-ENVIRONMENT VOTE. The Senate took no action on this legislation in 2021.
