Representative Elijah Crane (R-AZ) sponsored an amendment to H.R. 4821, the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2024, which would block the 20-year withdrawal of federal lands near Chaco Culture National Historic Park from new oil and gas leasing. This oil and gas leasing withdrawal was established at the request of a coalition of Tribal governments, including the Hopi Tribe and the All Pueblo Council of Governors, to ensure the protections of the irreplaceable cultural, historic, and natural resources vulnerable to oil and gas development in the region. On November 2, the House rejected the Crane amendment by a vote of 191-219 (House roll call vote 580).
