Re:  Oppose Kash Patel for FBI Director 

Dear Senator, 

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) believes that the climate, our democracy, and environmental justice require highly qualified, ethical public officials committed to protecting the people’s freedoms, respecting the rule of law, and ensuring equal justice for all. Each year, LCV publishes the National Environmental Scorecard, detailing the voting records of members of Congress. 

We urge you to vote NO on the nomination of Kash Patel for FBI Director. The nation’s preeminent law enforcement agency needs a nonpolitical leader who can be trusted to protect the people and refrain from abusing the Bureau’s enormous power. Patel is not that leader. 

The fact that Patel has no experience in a senior law enforcement role raises serious questions about whether he is capable of keeping the people safe as FBI Director. The experience he does have raises even graver concerns. He pushed the false narrative regarding the results of the 2020 election even as an appointee at the critically nonpolitical Department of Defense, and has been known to promote other false conspiracies. He has reportedly raised money for convicted insurrectionists and assembled an enemies list to persecute. His confirmation would imperil First Amendment freedom of the press, as he has a record of frivolous lawsuits against journalists and has said publicly that he wants to “come after the people in the media…criminally or civilly” for accurately reporting on the 2020 election.  

In recent days, whistleblowers have alleged that Patel is already directing the widely reported political purges happening at the FBI, which he denied under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee just weeks ago. If true, nothing could be more disqualifying for a potential FBI Director than conducting political purges of law enforcement and committing perjury about it. 

For all these reasons, LCV strongly urges you to vote NO on Kash Patel’s nomination for FBI Director. We will strongly consider including votes on this nomination in our next Scorecard. If you would like more information, please reach out to a member of our government relations team.
