Help LCV respond to threats to our communities and our climate in 2025 Give Now
Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will support sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Wendy Davis for Congress in Texas’ 21st District.
“LCV Action Fund is thrilled to endorse Wendy Davis to represent Texas’ 21st Congressional District because we know that she will be a fighter for our families’ health, clean drinking water and clean energy future in Texas and beyond,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “Davis is a long-time public servant in Texas and during her tenure in the Texas Senate she worked alongside Texas communities — especially African American communities disproportionately impacted by air pollution — to limit toxic air pollutants and protect children from excessive incidents of asthma experienced in their backyards.”
“Texas’ 21st Congressional district, which includes much of the Texas Hill Country, deserves a fighter who will protect families from the proliferation of cement quarries, over 900 of which have been permitted, that are threatening air and water quality in that region, said Wendy Davis. “Chip Roy’s advocacy for an absolute hands-off approach to polluters has betrayed the very people he was elected to serve, while I will be the champion they deserve.”
Wendy Davis has a long history of public service and advocating for the needs of families across Texas. Davis started her career in public service by serving on the Fort Worth City Council in 1999, where she focused on transportation and economic development projects. Davis had a strong environmental voting record in the Texas State Senate, where she received 100 percent in 2009, 96 percent in 2011 and 93 percent in 2013 on the Texas LCV legislative scorecard.
While in the Texas Senate, Davis’ district included Southeast Fort Worth, a large African American community that was experiencing the highest rates of childhood asthma in the country because of the overall negative air quality in North Texas combined with the fact that they lived downwind of significant cement kiln activity. Davis worked alongside impacted community members to shut this activity down, and, alternatively, to implement pollution capture technology to the existing kilns. Today, at least one major kiln has been shut down and another was required to add improved pollution capture methods to its operation. Davis was also successful in forcing TCEQ to install numerous air quality monitors in the region to test the cumulative air quality impacts of cement kilns and the venting and flaring of well-heads from Barnett Shale fracking activities. And, she was equally successful in requiring the recapture of gas released at the well-heads, rather than the venting and flaring of that gas. We are confident that Davis will bring this same commitment to environmental justice and public health to Congress.
