LCV Action Fund Endorses Senator Al Franken for Re-Election

Oct 6, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC—The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Al Franken for re-election to the U.S. Senate from Minnesota. Senator Franken is a genuine environmental leader committed to growing our clean energy economy and fighting climate change.

“Throughout his first term, Senator Franken has proven that he will work to ensure that Minnesota leads the way on producing clean energy technology,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “Our nation is lucky to have Senator Franken, someone who stands up to big polluters and recognizes the importance of addressing climate change.”

“I’m honored to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund,” said Senator Al Franken. “Climate change is real and I’m working to address this serious threat in the Senate. We must keep fighting for clean energy and energy efficient technology that will create jobs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil and help combat global climate change.”

As Chair of the Energy Subcommittee on the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, Senator Franken is an environmental champion who regularly urges Congress to act on climate change.   Earlier this year, he joined 30 of his Senate colleagues in an overnight session featuring floor speeches pushing for comprehensive action to combat climate change. Senator Franken would like to see Congress put a price on carbon to help transition to a clean energy economy with jobs that can’t be outsourced.

Energy efficiency and clean energy are at the heart of Senator Franken’s efforts to address climate change and reduce our nation’s dependence on fossil fuels.  That is why he cosponsored the Close Big Oil Tax Loopholes Act, which would eliminate billions in taxpayer funded subsidies to the largest oil and gas companies.  In 2011, he created “Back to Work Minnesota,” an initiative to expand energy efficiency awareness and increase energy efficient retrofits in the state.  He’s dedicated to expanding our clean energy economy, an industry that will continue to create good-paying jobs in Minnesota and revitalize the state’s manufacturing sector.

Senator Franken’s voting record earned him an impressive 100% score on LCV’s 2013 National Environmental Scorecard and a lifetime score of 94%. The non-partisan Scorecard is the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s record. For more information, visit https://scorecard.lcv.org.
