Shri Thanedar is an immigrant, former Michigan state representative, and accomplished chemist and business owner who will fight for the health and well-being of communities in Michigan.
After growing up in poverty in India, Thanedar moved to the United States at 24 years old to pursue higher education opportunities and support his family. He proceeded to earn a Master of Business Administration as well as a doctorate in chemistry, and continued on to build and lead research and pharmaceutical companies. In 2020, he was elected to represent the 3rd District in the Michigan House of Representatives, where he has supported strong legislation to protect Michigan’s waterways, including the Great Lakes. This included proposals to shut down the Enbridge Energy Line 5 oil pipeline and protection of native wildlife from invasive species. Thanedar supports the Green New Deal and investing in clean energy for Michigan’s future.
As a representative, Thanedar will champion reducing pollution in communities of color and funding research to study the impacts pollution has had on these communities. Thanedar is the first Indian-American to represent Michigan in Congress.
Thanedar joins the U.S. House to fill the seat of Representative Rashida Tlaib, who was reelected in Michigan’s 12th district after redistricting and earned a 96% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
In his own words:
“As a scientist, I’ve seen first hand the effects corporate polluters have on our communities and neighborhoods. It’s time to fight for clean water, air, and invest in clean renewable energy that boosts the economy, creates good, high paying jobs, and keeps Michiganders safe.”
