Hillary Scholten is an attorney with deep ties in western Michigan who has worked to defend immigrants, those who have faced housing discrimination, and victims of sexual harassment.

Before earning her law degree, Scholten worked as a case worker for the AIDSAction Committee, which represented LGBTQ+ people with housing discrimination cases, and at the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. After law school, she clerked for the immigration unit of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and then the U.S. Department of Justice during the Obama administration. In 2017, she and her family moved back to Grand Rapids where she worked at the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center as an attorney and provided volunteer legal advice for the Times Up Legal Defense Fund.

As a representative, Scholten is committed to protecting the health of communities in Michigan, working to address the state’s water crises from lead and PFAS pollution and growing its clean energy economy.

Scholten joins the U.S. House to fill the seat of Representative Peter Meijer, who was defeated in the Republican primary and earned a 43% score in 2021 on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
