LCV Launches Digital Ad Campaign Thanking Rep. Chris Gibson for Vote on Clean Power Plan

Holds Members of Congress Accountable for Their Vote on Clean Air

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is launching a digital ad campaign thanking Rep. Chris Gibson for his vote against Rep. Whitfield’s H.R. 2042, gutting the EPA’s Clean Power Plan. The $20,000 digital ad campaign, including Facebook advertisements and mobile alerts to LCV members, aims to hold Members of Congress accountable for their votes last week on Rep. Whitfield’s bill. The Facebook ads are targeted to their respective districts, and will run for over one week.

“At a time when all too many Members of Congress are sticking their heads in the sand, Congressman Chris Gibson is calling for action to address climate change and backing up his words with his votes,” said Gene Karpinski, President of LCV. “In particular his recent vote against H.R. 2042, a bill that attempts to gut the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, should be commended. We appreciate Congressman Gibson’s willingness to confront the climate challenge and look forward to continue working with him.”

“The votes on this bill sorted out who in Congress sided with polluters against action on climate change, and who is willing to fight for the health of our families,” he continued. “This bill struck at a central pillar of the Clean Air Act. It aimed to gut the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, which would put commonsense limits on power plant carbon pollution, and represents the most significant step we have ever taken to combat climate change.”

On June 2, 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) unveiled its draft Clean Power Plan, the first-ever national limits on carbon pollution from existing power plants. Power plants are the single largest source of carbon pollution in the U.S., responsible for approximately 40 percent of the pollution driving climate change. This critical step builds on prior actions the administration has already taken to nearly double the fuel efficiency of cars, which will also significantly reduce carbon pollution, and draft standards setting the first federal carbon pollution limits for new power plants.  On June 24th, the House of Representatives voted on H.R. 2042, Rep. Whitfield’s bill that would gut the Clean Power Plan. Reps. Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1), Dave Reichert (R, WA-8), Brad Ashford (D, NE-2), Ann Kirkpatrick (D, AZ-1), and Kyrsten Sinema (D, AZ-9) voted YEA, while Reps. Cheri Bustos (D, IL-17), Gwen Graham (D, FL-2), Frank LoBiondo (R, NJ-2), Chris Gibson (R, NY-19), and Carlos Curbelo (R, FL-26) voted NAY.

This follows another digital campaign launched last week by LCV, holding Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) accountable for Senate votes on the EPA and Clean Power Plan.

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is launching a digital ad campaign thanking Rep. Frank LoBiondo for his vote against Rep. Whitfield’s H.R. 2042, gutting the EPA’s Clean Power Plan. The $20,000 digital ad campaign, including Facebook advertisements and mobile alerts to LCV members, aims to hold Members of Congress, including Rep. LoBiondo, accountable for their votes last week on Rep. Whitfield’s bill. The Facebook ads are targeted to their respective districts, and will run for over one week.

“At a time when all too many Representatives in Congress are sticking their heads in the sand, Congressman Frank LoBiondo is calling for action to protect South Jersey’s environment and backing up his words with his votes,” said Gene Karpinski, President of LCV. “In particular his recent vote against H.R. 2042, a bill that attempts to gut the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, should be commended. We appreciate that Congressman LoBiondo understands the importance of protecting the health of New Jersey’s families and businesses from harmful pollutants, and we look forward to continue working with him.”

“The votes on this bill sorted out who in Congress sided with polluters against action on climate change, and who is willing to fight for the health of our families,” he continued. “This bill struck at a central pillar of the Clean Air Act. WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) is launching a digital ad campaign thanking Rep. Gwen Graham for her vote against Rep.

“Congresswoman Gwen Graham is standing up to climate change deniers and taking a commonsense approach to protecting our health and the environment with her recent vote against H.R. 2042,” said Gene Karpinski, President of LCV. “We appreciate Congresswoman Graham’s efforts to protect our health and reduce harmful carbon pollution and look forward to continue working with her to address the climate crisis.”

“The votes on this bill sorted out who in Congress sided with polluters against action on climate change, and who is willing to fight for the health of our families,” he continued. “This bill struck at a central pillar of the Clean Air Act. LCV Board Chair Carol M. Browner Statement on Supreme Court Decision on EPA Mercury Rule

WASHINGTON, DC – In response to today’s Supreme Court decision in the cases concerning EPA’s Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (Utility Air Regulatory Group v. EPA, National Mining Association v. EPA and Michigan v. EPA) the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) issued the following statement from LCV Board Chair, Carol M. Browner:

“Over the last forty years, through the authority of the Clean Air Act, we have made meaningful progress in cleaning up the air we breathe. To achieve this progress, we set strong standards based in science and then we find the most effective, efficient and common sense technology to reduce these dangerous pollutants. For more than a decade EPA has sought to reduce mercury – a toxic air pollutant – from power plants. Rather than first focusing on the science and how best to protect public health, today’s Supreme Court decision requires EPA to weigh the cost to industry before determining  how much toxic mercury must be cut. It’s an unfortunate decision that puts polluter profits over public health, but it doesn’t remove EPA’s fundamental authority to act to protect public health from dangerous pollutants and EPA should continue to work to find a solution that addresses this toxic pollution.”

LCV Education Fund Presents Oregon League of Conservation Voters with the John Hunting Winning for the Environment Award

Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Education Fund presented the John Hunting Winning for the Environment Award to the Oregon League of Conservation Voters during LCV Education Fund’s annual Capital Dinner this week.   This award was created to honor LCV Honorary Board Member John Hunting’s legacy of service and expertise to the conservation voters movement and to recognize the growing power of state LCVs.  Oregon LCV received the award for their groundbreaking policy win in the state legislature—the Clean Fuels Program—which will reduce carbon pollution and improve Oregon’s air quality.

“It’s an honor to present the Oregon League of Conservation Voters with this award for their cutting edge work on Oregon’s Clean Fuels Program,” said LCV Education Fund President Gene Karpinski. “The Oregon League of Conservation Voters played an absolutely critical role in helping pass the Clean Fuels Program legislation, and in doing so, they’ve moved the climate fight forward for both Oregon and our country.”

“We are immensely proud to have helped Oregon become the second state in the country to implement a Clean Fuels Program, and we’re deeply honored to receive this award.  With the Clean Fuels Program in place, Oregonians will enjoy more fuel options, cleaner air and will save $1.6 billion in fuel costs,” said Oregon League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Doug Moore. “Going forward, we’re excited to continue collaborating with our state leaders to make meaningful policy changes that tackle climate change and keep Oregon among the best places to call home.”

The Clean Fuels Program is forward-thinking legislation.  It mandates a 10% reduction of carbon content in fuels over the next ten years and will reduce unhealthy air pollution, lower fuel costs for Oregonians, and create more than 29,000 jobs.  Oregon LCV played an instrumental role in passing this legislation.  By mobilizing public support that demonstrated the immense popularity of climate solutions, Oregon LCV outmaneuvered Big Oil’s $2 million campaign opposing the Clean Fuel Program.

As the second state to implement a Clean Fuels Program, Oregon is leading the nation’s momentum on climate policy, demonstrating that smart organizing can lead to meaningful climate policy outcomes and climate solutions, especially at the state level.

LCV Launches Ad Campaign Criticizing Senator Mark Kirk’s Votes Against Clean Power Plan

Urges Kirk to Support Effort to Cut Carbon Pollution

You can view the ad here.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today launched a $50,000 digital ad campaign criticizing Senator Mark Kirk for his recent votes against the EPA’s Clean Power Plan. The fifteen-second ad will premiere in the Chicago area Monday, where it will run for a week generating over one million views. Script and research backup here.

“Senator Mark Kirk has unfortunately made it very clear in the last few weeks that he is in Congress to serve big polluters, not the people of Illinois. He was the deciding vote to undermine the Clean Power Plan, the single biggest step in our nation’s history to address climate change,” said Gene Karpinski, President of the League of Conservation Voters.

“It has been a real disappointment to see Sen. Kirk’s once strong environmental record plummet in recent years,” said Karpinski. “While he acknowledged the reality of man-made climate change as part of amendments to this year’s Keystone XL bill and Budget Resolution, he is now blocking action that would limit carbon pollution, fight climate change and protect our health. In the coming weeks and months, he will continue to face additional important votes on this issue. It is not too late for Senator Kirk to do what is right for the people of Illinois and join the fight to take meaningful action on climate change.”

Senator Mark Kirk currently has a 20 percent on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard, having fallen from 70 percent in 2010.

On June 2, 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) unveiled its Clean Power Plan, the first-ever national limits on carbon pollution from existing power plants. Power plants are the single largest source of carbon pollution in the U.S., responsible for approximately 40 percent of the pollution driving climate change. This critical step builds on steps the administration has taken to nearly double the fuel efficiency of cars, which will also significantly reduce carbon pollution and draft standards setting the first federal carbon pollution limits for new power plants.  On June 18, Senator Kirk voted in the Senate Appropriations Committee to effectively prevent the EPA from enacting the Clean Power Plan. In doing so, he opposed the pollution standards called for by two-thirds of his constituents.

LCV Statement on 100 Day Countdown to the Expiration of the Land and Water Conservation Fund

WASHINGTON, D.C. — With fewer than 100-days to the expiration of America’s most important conservation program, the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), LCV Land Conservation Fellow Andy French issued the following statement:

“Congress has less than 100 days to reauthorize the overwhelmingly popular Land and Water Conservation Fund before it expires at the end of September.  This critically important fund has successfully conserved treasured lands across the country, ranging from city parks to large landscapes, and enjoys broad bipartisan support. We have a moral obligation to future generations to continue investing in America’s parks, communities, and outdoor spaces, and we urge Congress to act immediately to do just that.”

LCV Statement in Anticipation of House Vote on Rep. Whitfield’s Bill Gutting EPA Clean Power Plan

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Tomorrow, the U.S. House is expected to vote on H.R. 2042. Rep. Whitfield’s bill undermines the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, which would put in place the first nationwide limits on the power plant carbon pollution. In anticipation of the full House vote on H.R. 2042, LCV Vice President of Government Affairs, Sara Chieffo issued the following statement:

“This legislation is in lockstep with the polluter-backed “just say no” approach to climate change. This bill strikes at a central pillar of the Clean Air Act, threatening the health of our families and gutting the EPA’s Clean Power Plan, which is the most important step our nation has have ever taken to combat climate change by setting commonsense limits on power plant carbon pollution. While the Pope is urging the world to act on climate change, and the administration is making critical progress, we urge Members of Congress to vote against this irresponsible legislation and stand with the American people, not polluters.”

LCV Statement on Release of EPA and NHTSA Draft Heavy Duty Truck Fuel Economy Standards

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to the release of the updated EPA and NHTSA Heavy Duty Truck Efficiency Rule, LCV Vice President of Government Affairs Sara Chieffo issued the following statement:

“Today’s release of the heavy-duty truck fuel efficiency standards marks another important step in the Obama Administration’s plan to curb carbon pollution and combat climate change. A more efficient truck fleet will save money on shipping, driving down costs for companies and consumers. We look forward to reviewing the rule and working with the EPA and NHTSA to craft the strongest possible final fuel efficiency standards.”

LCV Statement FY16 Senate Interior Appropriations Bill Mark Up

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Senate Appropriations Committee marked up and passed the FY16 Interior Appropriations bill. In response, LCV Deputy Legislative Director Alex Taurel issued the following statement:

“The Senate Interior Appropriations bill is an egregious attack on nearly every major environmental priority facing our nation, slashing funding for the EPA and other conservation priorities. This bill reads like it was written by big polluters, and includes damaging policy riders that have no place in a spending bill, including blocking the widely supported Clean Water Rule and Clean Power Plan. Not only will these riders hamper efforts to combat climate change, but they will turn back the clock to a time when industry can pollute our air and water with impunity. Thank you to Senators Udall and Mikulski, and the other Senators who stood up to big polluters by voting against this atrocious legislation.”
