Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) issued the following statement from LCV President Gene Karpinski ahead of the expected Senate vote to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the U.S. Supreme Court:

“The Republican Senate’s illegitimate confirmation of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court is a disgraceful power grab that will have lasting consequences for the Court and our planet.

“As communities deal with the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic reaching its highest level ever in recent days, this president and Senate Republicans have willfully chosen to allow families to continue to suffer, in order to achieve their partisan takeover of the courts. Each senator who votes to confirm Judge Barrett today holds personal responsibility and must be held to account.

“What’s more, Judge Barrett has made her stances on the pressing issues facing our nation crystal clear. By confirming her to the Supreme Court, Republicans placed healthcare coverage, reproductive rights, voting rights, and climate action on the chopping block. She was explicitly chosen to protect this president and his deeply unpopular political positions.

“The stakes of next week’s election were already higher than ever, but this vote underscores who is fighting to protect our communities, and who has abandoned us for partisan gain.”
