Washington, D.C. – Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) launched a $200,000 initiative in opposition to Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court by highlighting his long record of siding with polluters over people and mobilizing constituents in key states. The campaign will include digital ads and grassroots organizing to encourage the public to tell their senators to reject Kavanaugh, with an emphasis on Nevada, Maine and Alaska. “Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination is a direct threat to our health, our environment and our future,” said Ben Driscoll, LCV Judiciary Program Director. “From questioning the EPA’s authority to protect public health to favoring corporations over safety, he’s sided with polluters over people time and time again. With dozens of Trump’s environmental attacks pending in court, the stakes couldn’t be higher.”

Additionally, LCV is launching a daily email series and blog – “Dirty Decision of the Day” – which will examine Kavanaugh’s environmental record one decision at a time. The first post looks at one of his decisions the Supreme Court ultimately rejected, EME Homer City Generation, LP v. EPA. In the case, Kavanaugh struck down EPA’s limit on air pollution that crosses state lines.

This series will illustrate how Kavanaugh routinely ruled against the EPA’s authority to regulate pollution that is responsible for climate change, as well addressing the threat those pollutants pose to our air and water. It will also examine his record of disenfranchising voters, showing how Kavanaugh is an extreme, partisan nominee who has blocked voters’ access to participate equitably in our democracy.

LCV’s Supreme Court campaign is part of ongoing work to stop extreme judicial nominees who threaten the environment and democracy from being handed a lifetime appointment to the federal bench. LCV also sent a letter to the full Senate urging senators to oppose Kavanaugh’s nomination and noting that the vote may be included on the 2018 National Environmental Scorecard.
