Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, and New York LCV announced their endorsements of Mondaire Jones for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from New York’s 17th Congressional District.

“Mondaire Jones is committed to a just transition to a 100% renewable energy future, creating millions of good-paying jobs along the way,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We are proud to support his campaign because he is a community-driven leader who we know will be a strong voice in Congress advocating for bold and equitable solutions to the climate crisis.”

“Mondaire Jones is committed to making climate action a priority,” said Julie Tighe, President of the New York League of Conservation Voters. “He supports the Green New Deal to transform to a clean energy economy while ensuring a just transition and is committed to green transportation. He will also fight to protect our public lands and waters. That’s why we are excited to endorse Mondaire Jones for Congress and we urge all voters in the 17th Congressional District to cast their ballot for him this November.”

“I’m proud to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and New York LCV, organizations that work to elect leaders who will fight tirelessly for the environmental reforms our country so desperately needs,” said NY-17 Democratic nominee Mondaire Jones. “From the start, I’ve said that a Green New Deal is my number one legislative priority because if we don’t have a planet to inhabit, the rest of the issues I’ve been discussing are truly academic. We need more people in Congress who understand the urgency of climate change, and I’m honored to stand with LCV Action Fund and New York LCV in the fight to ensure a livable future and climate justice for all.”

Mondaire Jones is a 33-year-old former litigator in the Westchester County Law Department and former Department of Justice staffer during the Obama Administration. A resident of South Nyack, he is the Democratic nominee in New York’s 17th Congressional District. A product of East Ramapo public schools, Mondaire was raised in Section 8 housing and on food stamps in the Village of Spring Valley by a single mother who worked multiple jobs to provide for their family. He later graduated from Stanford University and Harvard Law School. He is a co-founder of the nonprofit Rising Leaders, Inc. and has previously served on the NAACP’s National Board of Directors and on the board of the New York Civil Liberties Union. Mondaire is a progressive running to fight for bold solutions to our biggest problems: a Green New Deal, tuition-free public college and student debt forgiveness, Medicare for All, and a full restoration of the SALT deduction for families in Westchester and Rockland. When elected, Mondaire will make U.S. history as the first openly gay, black member of Congress.

Jones is running on a platform of a Green New Deal. He is focused on a just transition to 100 percent renewable energy, and creating 20 million good-paying jobs in the process. He has committed to cosponsoring Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal for Public Housing Act (H.R. 5185), which invests in sustainable retrofits that include all needed repairs and the elimination of carbon emissions in federal public housing by transitioning to solar energy. A large part of his environmental platform is focused locally on the Indian Point Power Plant. Specifically, replacing the decommissioned power plant with renewable energy sources and ensuring that spent fuel rods are safely relocated. He has committed to re-introducing Representative Lowey’s Safe and Secure Decommissioning Act (H.R. 4441), which would ensure safe relocation of spent fuel and her Redistribution of Fines to our Communities Act (H.R. 4440), which would mitigate the economic impacts of plant closures.

About LCV Action Fund

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, the connected federal political action committee (PAC) of the League of Conservation Voters, works to elect leaders who stand up for a clean, healthy environment and to defeat anti-environment candidates who oppose climate action. Since the 1990 election cycle, LCVAF has helped elect and re-elect 90 U.S. Senators and 450 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections.
