Washington, D.C.– The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today its endorsement of Senator Ed Markey for re-election to the U.S. Senate from Massachusetts.

“Senator Ed Markey is one of the leading voices in the U.S. Senate for climate action,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “He is a proven and dedicated leader who knows how to craft strong environmental policy and is a champion for building America’s clean energy future. LCV Action Fund is proud to endorse him for reelection.”

“Senator Markey has been a tireless advocate for Massachusetts’ environment throughout his distinguished career in public service,” said Environmental League of Massachusetts Action Fund President Elizabeth Turnbull Henry. “He is focused on bringing more clean energy jobs to our state and has helped to make Massachusetts a national leader. Over the years, no one has done more for climate and energy policy than Ed Markey.”

“There is no greater challenge facing the planet than climate change, and I am honored to receive the endorsement of the phenomenal LCV Action Fund. The League of Conservation Voters has been my longtime partner in the fight for a clean energy future,” said Senator Markey. “We can unleash a Green New Deal that will combat climate change, create millions of jobs, transform our economy, and ensure justice for the communities who have suffered the most from our fossil fuel energy past. I will continue to stand up to the corporate polluters and special interests that dirty our air, water and environment. I thank LCV for their partnership in the fight for a clean energy revolution in the United States Senate.”

Senator Ed Markey is currently serving his first full term in the U.S. Senate representing Massachusetts since winning a June 2013 special election after serving in the House of Representatives since 1977. An attorney and member of the U.S. Army Reserve, Markey has been a long-time leader on climate and other environmental policies. In 2009, along with former U.S. Representative Henry Waxman (D-CA), he authored the American Clean Energy and Security Act, the only comprehensive climate bill to pass a chamber of the U.S. Congress. In the Senate, he has continued his advocacy as a member of the Committee on Environment and Public Works, the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, the Committee on Foreign Relations and the Senate Democratic Special Committee on the Climate Crisis. He’s led efforts to strengthen our nation’s fuel economy standards and to investigate Exxon Mobil’s funding of climate denial. He is an outspoken critic of the Trump administration’s rollbacks of climate progress and bedrock environmental laws. He is the Senate lead on the Green New Deal resolution and is calling for a transition to 100 percent clean energy. For his leadership, Senator Markey has earned a strong 94% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
