Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced its endorsement of Jeanne Shaheen for re-election to the U.S. Senate from New Hampshire.
“Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s leadership in the U.S. Senate is essential to implementing just and equitable climate solutions that will work for all communities and to protect our public lands and waters,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “She is a forward-looking champion who has worked tirelessly to promote a clean energy economy and fight for clean air and water in New Hampshire and across the nation.”
“Senator Shaheen has been a strong advocate for protecting New Hampshire’s environment throughout her time in public life, from protecting the Great Bay to leading the fight to permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) with the recent passage of the Great American Outdoors Act,” said Rob Werner, New Hampshire State Director of the League of Conservation Voters. “Jeanne Shaheen is a climate action leader, working to recommit the United States to the Paris Climate Accord and improve energy efficiency standards. New Hampshire and the nation need Senator Shaheen’s proven leadership in the U.S Senate to continue.”
“We must remain committed to real action to combat climate change, to keep our air and water clean and safe, to protect the environment so critical to our health and our economy, particularly here in New Hampshire. I look forward to continuing to work with the League of Conservation Voters in this urgent work,” said Senator Jeanne Shaheen. “Promoting clean energy and reducing harmful emissions are among my top priorities in Congress, which is why I have steered energy efficiency legislation to passage and am leading legislation to direct the Trump administration to meet the standards set by the Paris Climate Accord. I am proud to have LCV Action Fund endorse my re-election and to stand with them to protect our environment.”
Senator Jeanne Shaheen is the first woman in U.S. history to be elected both Governor and U.S. Senator. Since being elected to the Senate in 2009, Senator Shaheen has been a leader for our environment and fighting climate change that threatens the natural beauty and economic future of New Hampshire and the world. Some of her many accomplishments include helping secure increased funding for the Department of Energy’s energy efficiency and renewable energy programs in the omnibus spending bills for 2018 and co-sponsoring legislation to prevent Trump’s anti-environmental executive orders from going into effect. She has introduced legislation in Congress to direct the Trump administration to meet the standards set by the Paris Climate Accord. To make progress on energy policy, Shaheen has teamed up with Republican Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, authoring and steering to passage critical energy efficiency legislation that saves American families billions of dollars in energy costs while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by millions of tons annually. She is currently leading efforts in Congress to expose toxic “forever” chemicals, called PFAS, found in materials used by firefighters and the military and recently discovered to be contaminating water supplies across New Hampshire. She has consistently fought to block oil drilling off of New Hampshire’s coast and is leading bipartisan legislation to ban drilling and protect New England’s seacoast. Before becoming a U.S. Senator, Shaheen was the first elected female Governor of New Hampshire. During her tenure as Governor, she helped pass the Clean Power Act, the first piece of comprehensive legislation in the U.S. to reduce the emissions of four major pollutants from power plants. Her administration also implemented energy efficiency programs that have saved New Hampshire families and businesses over $1 billion. Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s voting record has earned her a perfect 100% on LCV’s 2019 National Environmental Scorecard and an impressive lifetime score of 96%.
