WASHINGTON, DC— The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Raúl Grijalva for re-election to U.S. Congress (AZ-03). Grijalva is a long time champion for safeguarding the environment, addressing climate change and conserving public lands.

“Congressman Raúl Grijalva has been one of the strongest advocates for protecting our environment and all communities throughout his time in Congress,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski.  “He has been a leader on preserving our open spaces, including 27 million acres of public lands and waterways in Arizona and across the country. He recognizes the importance of combating climate change and ensuring that all people can enjoy a safe, healthy environment today and for generations to come.”

Lately we’ve seen battles on everything from endangered species protection to global warming, defending our public lands from privatization to advocating for environmental justice and more diversity in national parks. Helping to win those battles is among my proudest duties in Congress, and earning LCVAF’s endorsement is as great an honor this year as it’s ever been.”

Congressman Grijalva uses his post as the Ranking Member on the House Natural Resources Committee to defend our environment from constant attacks while pushing to make progress on the environmental challenges of our time. He works tirelessly to protect our public lands and is the founding co-chair of the National Landscape Conservation System Caucus. His efforts led to the enactment of the National Landscape Conservation System, which protects more than 27 million acres of National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Wilderness Areas, Wilderness Study Areas, and Wild and Scenic Rivers.

Ranking Member Grijalva has been leading a grassroots effort over the past 18 months to establish the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument to protect sacred Native American land and cultural resources in Northern Arizona. On July 6, President Obama received signed petitions from more than 550,000 people across the country supporting Grijalva’s campaign to permanently protect sensitive habitats and historical places north and south of Grand Canyon National Park. Tribes across the region have publicly endorsed his effort and thanked him for his leadership in championing a national monument that recognizes and honors the history of native peoples.

Grijalva has earned an impressive 95 percent lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. The non-partisan Scorecard is the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues.
