Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today the endorsement of Mark Kelly for re-election to the U.S. Senate representing Arizona.
“Senator Mark Kelly has demonstrated his strong commitment to climate action and building a clean energy economy for Arizona in the Senate,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “LCV Action Fund is proud to support Senator Kelly for re-election because we know that he will continue to fight for Arizona’s communities, creating good-paying clean energy jobs and securing Arizona’s water future. Now more than ever, we need leaders like Senator Kelly who are committed to prioritizing people over corporate polluters and their profits and who we can count on to fight for Arizona’s clean air, clean water, and resilient climate for all communities.”
“As a retired Navy pilot, engineer, and NASA astronaut, I’ve spent my career approaching the problems facing our country using science, data, and facts,” said Senator Mark Kelly. “Arizonans feel the impact of our changing climate every single day – from the western drought to brutal wildfire seasons to more and more 100+ degree days. That’s why I’ve taken action, working with Republicans and Democrats to deliver results to tackle these issues and support Arizona families. I’m grateful to have the support of LCV Action Fund in this fight.”
Senator Mark Kelly is a retired U.S. Navy officer, engineer, and astronaut. He flew 39 combat missions while serving as a naval aviator, and he was selected by NASA in 1996 along with his twin brother to travel to space four times serving as both the pilot and the commander of the Space Shuttle. During his time as an astronaut, Senator Kelly witnessed the deforestation of the Amazon from space and knows firsthand what climate change can do to the planet. Senator Kelly retired from the Navy and NASA in 2011 to care for his wife, former Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, during her recovery from a tragic shooting. Following the shooting, Kelly and Giffords founded an organization dedicated to promoting responsible gun ownership and common sense gun safety measures. During his first term in the Senate, he has served on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources and the Committee on Environment and Public Works. He has cosponsored several pro-environment bills, including the Drinking Water and Wastewater Infrastructure Act and the Solar Energy Research and Development Act. Senator Kelly has earned an outstanding lifetime score of 97% on the LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
