Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced its endorsements of Nancy Goroff for New York’s 1st Congressional District and Jackie Gordon for New York’s 2nd Congressional District for election to the U.S. House of Representatives.

“LCV Action Fund is committed to growing our pro-environment majority in the House to take bold action on the climate crisis and New Yorkers deserve leaders like Nancy Goroff and Jackie Gordon who will prioritize the health and safety of all communities,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We are proud to endorse these candidates who have made it clear they will prioritize clean air, clean water, and equitable solutions to the climate crisis.”

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund,” said Jackie Gordon. “Combating climate change and fortifying environmental protections have been principal tenets of my campaign since day one, and I will continue to champion these issues in Washington. Here on Long Island, we’ve experienced first-hand the consequences of climate change and environmental degradation, as groundwater contamination, pollution of our Great South Bay, and rising sea levels present imminent threats to our community. In Congress, I look forward to partnering with LCV to preserve our clean water, combat carbon pollution, and advocate for Long Island’s South Shore.”

“On Long Island, our environment is central to our way of life. We must protect our coastlines and our water, and keep our air clean,” said Nancy Goroff. “Suffolk families deserve a climate hawk, and as Congress’s first female Ph.D. scientist, I promise to lead on these issues, which is why I’m honored to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund.”

Nancy Goroff graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and then earned her Ph.D. at UCLA. She was a National Science Foundation and Research Corporation postdoctoral fellow at the University of Michigan. She has been a professor and researcher at Stony Brook University for the last 23 years, including serving as chair of the chemistry department. In her research at Stony Brook, she worked to create new organic semiconductors to make solar energy more affordable and has been involved with the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). Her campaign has also focused on the need to protect Long Island’s water from PFAS, dioxane and other contaminants, and upgrading the water infrastructure to help protect people’s drinking waters as well as the local bays and other waterways. If elected, she will be the first woman with a Ph.D. in science elected to Congress.

Jackie Gordon was born in Jamaica, West Indies, and grew up in Queens, New York. She received her BS in Health Education at Hunter College, her MS in Counselor Education at Queens College and a Professional Diploma in Educational Leadership from Queens College. In 1984, she joined the Army Reserves and retired in 2014 as a Lieutenant Colonel. She served our country overseas as a platoon leader in Germany during Operation Desert Storm, as an operations officer at Guantanamo Bay during the Global War on Terror, as a battle captain in Baghdad during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq, and as Commander of the 310th Military Police Battalion in Afghanistan in 2012. From 1986 to 2020, she worked in the public school system, including most recently as a guidance counselor at Wilson Technological Center. In 2007, Gordon was elected to the Babylon Town Council, the first Black woman to be elected to that body. As a member of the Council she worked to protect the local environment and encourage smart development.

About LCV Action Fund

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, the connected federal political action committee (PAC) of the League of Conservation Voters, works to elect leaders who stand up for a clean, healthy environment and to defeat anti-environment candidates who oppose climate action. Since the 1990 election cycle, LCVAF has helped elect and re-elect 90 U.S. Senators and 450 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections.
