Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today the endorsement of Hillary Scholten for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District. 

“Hillary Scholten is deeply committed to protecting the health of all communities in Michigan, including addressing the state’s water crises from lead and PFAS pollution and growing our clean energy economy,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We are excited to support her campaign for Congress because we know she will be a strong advocate for climate, democracy, and the environment and prioritize the health and well-being of communities over polluter profits.”

We need leaders in Congress who will boost our investments in clean, renewable energy and hold polluters accountable to protect our water and hedge against the impacts of climate change,” said Lisa Wozniak, executive director of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters. “Hillary Scholten holds our Great Lakes as a top priority and will stand up for West Michigan in Congress to push for clean energy solutions that ensure a safe, healthy future and address the climate crisis with the urgency it deserves.”

In Congress, I will fight to ensure our drinking water is free from PFAS and other harmful chemicals, work to bring green energy jobs to West Michigan, and help reduce our reliance on foreign oil by promoting electric vehicle production,” said Hillary Scholten. “I look forward to working with the League of Conservation Voters to protect our environment for the health, safety, and enjoyment of the people across the Great Lakes State.

Hillary Scholten was born and raised in western Michigan, growing up in Hudsonville, outside of Grand Rapids. Her family’s ties to Grand Rapids go back to her great, great grandparents who emigrated to the city from the Netherlands. She earned her bachelor’s degree in social work from Gordon College and her law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law. Before law school, she was a case worker for the Aids Action Committee, which represented LGBTQ+ people with housing discrimination cases, and at the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. After law school, she clerked for the immigration unit of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and then the U.S. Department of Justice during the Obama administration. In 2017, she and her family moved back to Grand Rapids where she worked at the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center as an attorney and provided volunteer legal advice for the Times Up Legal Defense Fund.
