Washington D.C.- The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today its endorsement of Cal Cunningham for U.S. Senate in North Carolina.

“As an Army veteran and environmental entrepreneur, Cal Cunningham knows firsthand the national security and economic threats posed by the climate crisis,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “Cal is committed to building a clean energy economy in North Carolina and across the country, and he has the experience to lead the way forward on solutions. That is why we are so thrilled to endorse Cal for the U.S. Senate.”

“Cal Cunningham has been a key ally in the fight to protect our state’s air, water, lands, and healthy communities,” said North Carolina LCV Director of Governmental Relations Dan Crawford. “North Carolinians are already suffering from climate-fueled extreme weather, and understand we need leaders who will act on climate to protect our families and our future. We know we can count on him to also protect our economic future — to stand against drilling off our coast and to invest in good-paying clean energy jobs right here in North Carolina.”

“Communities across our state have been devastated by historic flooding and deadly hurricanes that have a dramatic impact on families, our economy and our future but too many in Washington have turned a blind eye or denied the problem altogether,” said Cal Cunningham. “I’m running to stand up and do what’s right for North Carolina, and am proud to work with the League of Conservation Voters to confront these challenges head-on by expanding good-paying, clean energy jobs, holding polluters accountable and building opportunities for our state for years to come.”

Cal Cunningham served in the North Carolina Senate from 2000 to 2002, where he was a cosponsor of the landmark Clean Smokestacks bill, which reduced harmful pollutants like sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides by over 70 percent from the state’s coal-fired power plants. After September 11, 2001, Cal volunteered to join the U.S. Army Reserve and went on to serve three active duty tours, including in Afghanistan and Iraq. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of North Carolina LCV and now helps lead a nationally-recognized waste reduction company that focuses on minimizing environmental impacts. In the Senate, he will focus on combating the climate crisis, bringing clean energy jobs to North Carolina, and protecting our air, land and water.
