Washington, DC – On what would have been labor rights leader Cesar Chavez’s 90th birthday, the League of Conservation Voters President Gene Karpinski issued the following statement:

“Today we pay homage to Cesar Chavez’s legacy as a champion for healthy communities, and leader in the movement that asserted the rights and dignity of farmworkers and all people across the United States. The Trump administration repeatedly attacks the very values and policies that Chavez and the farmworker movement, secured for the benefit our country. We are committed to continue Chavez and the farmworkers fight.

This week, in addition to issuing an executive order that would roll back commonsense public health protections and put the well-being of communities at risk, the Trump administration decided not to ban chlorpyrifos, a pesticide linked to nervous system damage in children and affects the health of our nation’s farmworkers and unborn children.  The administration’s decision is an attack on people of our country—the people that Cesar Chavez, farmworkers and others fought to protect.  LCV is committed to fighting this administration’s assaults on public health and the environment—sí se puede!”
