New poll in Senate race shows Perdue and Nunn tied at 47%

WASHINGTON – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today announced the addition of Georgia Republican Senate candidate David Perdue to LCV’s trademark Dirty Dozen program this cycle. The Dirty Dozen targets candidates — regardless of party affiliation — who consistently side against the environment and are running in races in which LCV has a serious chance to affect the outcome. Last election cycle, LCV defeated 11 of the 12 Dirty Dozen candidates. A poll released today by LCV Victory Fund shows the Senate race tied at 47%. 

“David Perdue is a climate science denier who would undo vital public health and environmental safeguards. As Georgia’s next Senator, Michelle Nunn would collaborate with Democrats and Republicans alike to grow investments in clean energy jobs that can’t be outsourced,” said Daniel J. Weiss, LCV Senior Vice President for Campaigns.

Despite the fact that NASA, the National Academy of Scientists and 97 percent of climate scientists agree that human activities are causing climate change, Perdue has claimed that “in science there’s an active debate going on” about the issue. Perdue also made attacks on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) – America’s defender of air and water quality – a centerpiece of his campaign. He pledged to “remove burdensome EPA regulations,” promised to “rein in overreaching EPA bureaucrats,” and attacked the EPA’s proposal to “take over” streams and wetlands vital to the drinking water quality for 117 million Americans. 

Perdue called EPA’s Clean Power Plan “shortsighted regulations.” In reality, the Clean Power Plan would protect public health and marks our nation’s biggest step towards tackling the challenge of climate change. Polling conducted for LCV shows significant, nationwide support for the EPA’s proposed standards, and independent, nationwide polling also shows strong support for the plan, including a Washington Post-ABC News poll that found that a “lopsided and bipartisan majority of Americans support federal limits on greenhouse gas emissions.”

Perdue also signed a pledge that protects billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded subsidies to oil companies, and he’s even attacked Nunn for wanting to “act now” on climate change.  

In September, LCV Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, endorsed Nunn in this race, highlighting her support for commonsense solutions that protect our environment, grow our clean energy economy and preserve our air, water and public lands.
