Washington, DC: In response to the passing of Antonio Gonzalez, president of the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, Fernando Cázares, National Director of Chispa, a community organizing program of the League of Conservation Voters, released the following statement:

“We’re deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Antonio Gonzalez, president of the Southwest Voter Registration Education Project, the largest and oldest non-partisan Latino participation organization in the United States. We extend our sincere condolences to his family and community. Few others have done more to register, educate and turn out Latinx voters than Antonio did, the effects of which we’re still witnessing today. His work organizing immigrants and low-income communities and building environmental justice coalitions touched the lives of millions across the country and even the globe. We are honored and humbled to carry on his legacy of tireless advocacy for our Latinx brothers and sisters.”
